What your dominant colour energy says about how you communicate
A closer look at the four Insights Discovery colour energies — and the practical differences they make in everyday workplace interactions.
One of the most common things people say after an Insights Discovery workshop is some version of: “That explains so much.”
Not because the profile tells them something they didn’t know about themselves — but because it gives them language for patterns they’d always noticed but never been able to name.
The four colour energies
Insights Discovery uses four colour energies to describe behavioural preferences. Everyone has all four — the difference is which ones each person leads with.
Fiery Red
People leading with Fiery Red energy are typically direct, decisive, and results-focused. They want to get things done, they’re not afraid to make decisions, and they tend to communicate in short, clear sentences.
In practice, this can look like confidence and drive — or, under pressure, impatience and a tendency to run over other people’s contributions without realising it.
Sunshine Yellow
Sunshine Yellow energy is about people and possibilities. Those leading with it tend to be enthusiastic, expressive communicators who thrive on connection and new ideas.
In practice, this can look like inspiration and energy — or, under pressure, scattered thinking and a tendency to overpromise.
Earth Green
Earth Green energy is about care, consistency, and values. People leading with it are often excellent listeners who build strong, loyal relationships.
In practice, this can look like dependability and warmth — or, under pressure, a reluctance to voice disagreement and a tendency to absorb stress quietly.
Cool Blue
Cool Blue energy is about rigour, accuracy, and quality. Those leading with it tend to be thorough, methodical, and process-driven.
In practice, this can look like precision and reliability — or, under pressure, analysis paralysis and a tendency to appear distant.
Why this matters in practice
Understanding your own colour energy preferences — and those of the people around you — changes the quality of your conversations.
It’s harder to be frustrated by someone’s communication style when you understand why they communicate the way they do. And it’s easier to adapt your own approach when you can see clearly what’s natural for you and what requires conscious effort.
This is the practical value of Insights Discovery — not as a label, but as a language.
